IN-PERSON MEETUP: The LLM Landscape Today and a Case Study of Using LLMs to Superpower Search
Date: 28th November 2023 Time: 5.45pm-8pm ET (GMT-5)
The exponential growth of large language models (LLMs) is transforming business and academia in unexpected and exciting ways. In response, we are creating a space for people involved in building, developing, and applying large language models (LLMs) to gather in person to connect and learn from each other. Each session will feature talks by people with expertise in an area of LLM or doing something interesting with LLMs followed by time for Q&A and networking.
Whether you are an entrepreneur, engineer, or data scientist working to better solve old problems or tackle new ideas, we invite you to learn about what people are doing with LLMs in academia, industry, and government.
When: 6-8pm Tues November 28, 2023; doors open at 5:45pm
Where: BasisTech, 1070 Broadway, Somerville, MA 02144 (directions) is a 10 minute walk from the Davis Sq. T station
What: Two speakers followed by Q&A. Pizza and drinks will be served

Talk#1: Neural Computing, A History: The last 140 years in 30 minutes
Summary: Since the discovery of the neuron in the 1880s and the invention of the perceptron in 1943, biologically inspired computation has been an important part of AI. With many historical photographs and reference to critical papers, this talk follows the neural-inspired computing through the birth of artificial intelligence, two AI winters, and explores whats on the horizion for neural computing, including the return to analog computing and the possibility of using quantum computers for deep learning and optimization.

Talk#2: Metasearch and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG): Two Great Tastes that Taste Great Together
Summary: In this brief talk, Sid Probstein, creator of Swirl, will show how metasearch is a game-changing way of finding, selecting and extracting information from any source to prompt generative AI – without pre-indexing all the data that might ever be needed – to answer a potential question. In addition to a brief demo, Sid will cover the following topics: How personalized, user-directed AI saves knowledge workers massive amounts of time Why you can finally, safely search multiple enterprise repositories without copying all data What software companies and service providers can do to add AI to existing applications without huge costs Why you might never have to run another important search thanks to the subscribe feature Sid will be joined by Adam Haight and Erik Spears from Swirl and will happily take questions.
